A bench warrant has been issued for a New Jersey man who allegedly stole three World Series rings from the Phillies team offices.
Officials say 22-year-old Matthew Mervine of Berlin, N.J. skipped a preliminary hearing Thursday. Mervine is accused of swiping three 2008 World Series rings from Citizens Bank Park in October.
Team officials say Mervine was kicked out of a playoff game and was videotaped taking the rings after writing down his personal information on a job application.
Advertisement Authorities quickly arrested Mervine and recovered the rings, which are worth $1,100 and intended for scouts.
Court records do not list an attorney for Mervine.
A former ballpark janitor is also charged with stealing a team executive's World Series ring in a separate incident.
